Bucket List Talk

I have learned that I have a condition called "fernweh",

A combination of the two German words "fern" (distance) and "wehe" (ache), that translates into English as a yearning to explore far flung places across the planet. It's an even better description than my favorite term wanderlust. Journey with me.

My 5 Favorite UNESCO World Heritage Sites

There are some sites in the world that are so extraordinary and culturally significant that they have a category all their own. These unique landmarks are protected by international convention administered by UNESCO and are specially designated as World Heritage Sites because of their “outstanding value to humanity”. Currently there are 1,154 such sites (Italy has the most at 58). New sites are added each year. These are the must see places around the globe and they form the blueprint for my travels. My five favorite sites (so far) are, in my order:

Dear Mr. Fantasy

This song transports me to another time and place more than any other. And the lyrics mean more than ever as we seek to get out of the heavy gloom the country, indeed the entire world, seems to be stuck in today.

Erosion

Erosion is the "gradual destruction or diminution of something". In this case I refer to the erosion of nothing less than our most precious gift, freedom.

The Pyramids of Giza, Egypt. It is impossible to describe how immense these structures are until you’re standing next to them. In fact, the Great Pyramid a/k/a Khufu or Cheops (seen here on the far left) was the tallest man-made structure in the world for more than 3,800 years and is the oldest of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World and the only one intact today. Together, the three pyramids are so monumental that you have to travel some distance just to get all three in a single picture such as I did here. Fun fact: I have been in the interior chambers of all three!

Machu Picchu, Peru. This 15th century Inca citadel located almost 8,000 feet in the Andes is without question one of the most magnificent settings in the world. Gazing at it from any angle is a sacred experience. I have been to Machu Picchu several times and it never gets old. Fun Fact: I hiked the Inca Trail in 1995 and the experience of gazing down on the city for the first time from above as I walked through the Inti Punku or Sun Gate is something I will never forget!

The Parthenon, Athens, Greece. This Doric masterpiece dedicated to the Goddess Athena is THE enduring symbol of Classical ancient Greece, democracy and indeed all of Western Civilization. The New Acropolis Museum had just opened when a visited a few years ago. Primarily housing sculptures that adorned the iconic temple, its use of glass allows light to flood into the building and illuminate the priceless collection in ambient natural light. Fun fact: I am returning very soon and can’t wait to once again walk in the footsteps of Pericles, the “first citizen of Athens”.

The Rose City of Petra, Jordan. Many may recognize the breathtaking Siq shown here, a sandstone slot of an entrance made famous by Indiana Jones into this magnificent rock carved city. This ancient trading center of the Nabataeans is now a symbol of modern Jordan. It is one of the world’s most famous archaeological sites and is an experience not to be missed. Fun fact: I road a horse out of the site after an incredible day of visiting this massive site. I did feel like Indy!

I WOULD LOVE TO BOOK YOUR NEXT ADVENTURE!

MY OFFER

As an author, I seek to enlighten those around me as I have been enlightened.

Basilica de la Sagrada Familia and all things Gaudi in Barcelona, Spain. Under construction since 1882, this Gaudi designed architectural wonder inspires awe and a sense of the sacred outside and inside. Which is why I chose a picture I took from the inside since almost every photos people see is of the exterior. But it is on the inside where your skin tingles and you get goosebumps from the divine presence within. Fun fact: seven of his works are UNESCO World Heritage Sites
