Nassau has another not-so-secret specialty! The Bahama Rum Cake. On our city tour, our driver asked if we wanted to stop at a rum cake factory and of course, the answer was a resounding yes! We arrived just before a busload of tourists so the timing was perfect. They were waiting for you at the door with sanitizer before you could enter the store. But once you were inside you had the opportunity to taste several different flavors of amazing rum cakes and have as many samples as you wish.
The Bahamas Rum Cake Factory began in downtown Nassau in 2000. George Bates, originally from the United Kingdom, created what he thought was the perfect “Original” Rum Cake and obviously, everyone agreed with him. He opened the Rum Cake Store and today it has grown into the most favorite brand of Rum Cake in the Bahamas. In 2014 it was recognized as the Official Rum Cake of The Bahamas.
There are twelve different flavors of rum cakes from which to choose. They are small 6 ounce cakes so they are the perfect size to bring back as gifts and a gift for yourself to relive just a little of “the Bahamas” when you get back home.
