The Antikythera mechanism is an ancient analogue computer (dated between 205-100 B.C.) believed to have been used to predict cosmic movements. It was so advanced for its time that technological devices approaching its complexity and workmanship did not appear again until the development of mechanical astronomical clocks in Europe in the fourteenth century, approximately 1500 years later.[ All known fragments of the Antikythera mechanism are kept at the National Archaeological Museum in Athens, Greece (where this picture was taken) in a very informative display with a number of artistic reconstructions of how the mechanism may have looked and what it may have been used for in ancient times. The ancients were far more sophisticated than we give them credit. It was discovered in a ship wreck thereby the rust. Amazing.
